Crushers Use Five Run Sixth To Sink Rockford

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers sent all nine batters to the plate in the sixth inning of Monday evening's contest against the Rockford Riverhawks, and scored five times to snap a 3-3, tie, taking the series opener, 8-3.

The victory for the Crushers, (23-28) marked the sixth series in a row that they've won the opening contest, while the loss for the Riverhawks (23-29) was their fifth in seven games against the Crushers this season.

Both teams did a lot of damage early on. Jereme Milons belted a one out single in the bottom of the first inning, and scored the game's first run on a double from Andrew Davis. The Riverhawks answered in the next half inning, scoring twice with two outs to take the lead. Luis Parache belted a solo homerun to tie the game, before Jeremy Richter and Reno Malay belted back-to-back doubles to give Rockford a 2-1 lead.

Lake Erie countered with a two-run second inning of their own. Kyle Shaffer and Robby Kuzdale ripped back-to-back doubles with two outs. Kuzdale's double plated Shaffer, and Jodam Rivera singled in Kuzdale to give the Crushers the lead.

Malay began Rockford's half of the fifth inning with his second double of the night. Greg Van Horn bunted him over to third, and he scored the tying run on Freddy Parejo's sacrifice fly.

The five run rally in the sixth inning began with a lead off walk issued to newly acquired Evan Sharpley. Shaffer followed the walk with a base hit, and they both advanced on Kuzdale's sacrifice bunt. Rivera came through for the Crushers again by smashing a two-run single to left field.

Later in the sixth, Davis and Kulbacki were issued back-to-back free passes, loading the bases for Jason Taylor. During the at bat, Rivera scored on a wild pitch, before Taylor reached on a base hit on the left side of the infield, which scored both Davis and Kulbacki.

Paul Daniels (2-1) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief and picked up his second win of the season. Daniels and Ruben Flores held the Riverhawks to just three hits over four scoreless innings of relief. Guido Fonseca (2-6) suffered the loss, after allowing six runs on 10 hits over five and two-thirds.

Davis hit safely three times, for the third game in a row. The Kingston, Ohio, native went 3-for-4, with a run and an RBI, increasing his on base streak to 22 games. Davis has hit safely 25 times in his last 11 games. Rivera also turned in a three hit performance, going 3-for-5 with a trio of singles to extend his on base streak to 18 games.

The Crushers will continue their three game series against the Rockford Riverhawks at All Pro Freight Stadium on Tuesday night. Right hander Josh Roberts (5-3, 3.88) will start for the Crushers and the Riverhawks will counter with left hander Alex Szymanski (4-1, 3.08). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
