Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (28-22) @ WINDY CITY THUNDERBOLTS (27-24) Monday, July 18 - 10:05 a.m. CT
Standard Bank Stadium - Crestwood, IL Game #51 - Road Game #25 (28-22, 12-12) RHP #33 JAKE RENSHAW (5-3, 3.76 ERA) vs. RHP #5 BRYANT COTTON (4-3, 5.36 ERA)
Last Time Out...
On his first day off the Disabled List, Hector Pellot smacked two home runs and the Joliet Slammers (28-22) knocked off the Rockford RiverHawks (23-28) by a final score of 12-10 Sunday night. Joliet fell behind 3-0 in the first inning when Jason James hit a three run home run, but they rallied for six runs in the second frame and never trailed again. Pellot's three run home run gave them a 6-3 lead and Kyle Maunus smacked a solo shot the very next inning to make the score 7-3. Erik Lis' two-RBI single in the fourth extended the advantage to 9-3 and another home run by Pellot in the sixth gave the Slammers an 11-4 lead. But Rockford rallied behind a Jake Eigsti grand slam in the seventh off reliever Chris Pack. With their lead cut to 11-8, the Slammers got an insurance run in the seventh on a Ben Hewett sacrifice fly. Ryan Quigley gave up two runs in the ninth but was able finished off Rockford.
For Starters...
Jake Renshaw's last start was a brilliant one as he threw the first complete game in franchise history to lead Joliet to a 6-2 win over Normal on July 9th. He faced Windy City back on June 24th and took the loss, going six innings and giving up five runs, four of them earned in a 5-0 defeat. Renshaw was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The 25-year old right hander put up excellent numbers last year in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances.
Rivalry Renewed...
The ThunderBolts and the Slammers have been battling for first place all season and it's only appropriate since the two teams are only about 30 minutes from each other. So far the ThunderBolts lead the season series four games to two, but the Slammers lead in the standings by 1.5 games. Another bit of intrigue between the two teams involves outfielder Devin Shepherd, who was released by Joliet earlier in the year only to have an All-Star season so far with Windy City as their Designated Hitter. Former Slammer Lee Rubin is also a ThunderBolt now as well as Joliet traded him for a player to be named later.
Road Warriors as of late...
The Slammers are in the midst of their longest road winning streak of the year as they've won their last four games away from Silver Cross Field. Joliet's recent hot streak has allowed them to reach the .500 mark (12-12) away from their home stadium.
Walking to first and crossing the plate...
Kyle Maunus is only hitting .218 this season but he's tied for the team lead in runs scored with Bobby Leeper as they've both crossed the plate 32 times this year. Maunus has scored at least one run in six consecutive games for the Slammers. He now leads the team in walks with 24 on the season.
Feeling some aggression...
This series matches the two offenses with the fewest walks on the 2011 Frontier League season. Windy City has drawn 169 walks while the Slammers have only drawn 171 themselves.
MVP!
Erik Lis started at first base for the East Division in the Frontier League All-Star Game on Wednesday and took home the MVP award as the East won 4-2. Lis hit a two-RBI triple in the first inning and would come around to score. He added a single later in the game as he went 2-3. Lis currently leads the Slammers in batting avg. (.316), HR (10), and RBI (43).
Transaction Wire...
Joliet released OF John Wagle after last night's game. The Slammers activated INF Hector Pellot from the 14-Day DL before yesterday's game.
