Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers used back-to-back homers from Juan Sanchez and Daniel Aldrich in the third inning of Wednesday night's contest to score a 3-2 victory over the Joliet Slammers at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The victory for the Crushers (38-53) marked their first win at home since August 18, snapping a six-game slide at home, while the loss for the Slammers (39-53) was just their second in eight games against the Crushers this season.
On a night where the Crushers spoiled a few chances to score, they used the long ball to score all of their runs, and received great pitching performances from Daniel DeSimone (3-2), Mike Devine and Trevor Longfellow (14), as they held the Slammers to just three hits.
Joliet got on the board first, ironically using the long ball to take their only advantage of the game. Marc Flores smashed a solo homer at the beginning of the second inning, his second of the series, and his sixth of the season.
Lake Erie scored all three runs in the bottom of the third with two outs. Anderson Hidalgo was on first base with two down, when Sanchez came to the plate, and belted a two-run homer to left, his second of the year, giving the Crushers a 2-1 lead. Aldrich followed with a solo homer to right, which was his first of the season.
Throughout the game, the Crushers had several chances to score, as they left a runner on third base on three separate occasions.
Joliet scored another run in the top of the seventh inning, and did so without recording a hit. Jeremy Nowack reached on a throwing error by Jose Barraza at first, and scored later in the inning on an errant pickoff attempt from catcher Emmanuel Quiles.
DeSimone went five innings and allowed just a run on a pair of hits while fanning one batter to score the win in just his second start of the season. Devine allowed an unearned run on one hit over three innings to hold the lead, while Longfellow worked a perfect ninth inning to grab the save. Kevin Walter (2-9) allowed three runs on six hits over three innings and took the loss.
For the second night in a row, three Crushers hit safely multiple times. They've hit safely 19 times over the last two nights. Trevor Stevens led the way at the top of the order, going 2-for-3 and reached three times. Both Sanchez and Aldrich went 2-for-4 on the night as well.
The Crushers will play their final home game of the season and finish their series with the Joliet Slammers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. Right-hander Brad Duffy (8-5, 3.30) will start for the Crushers and the Slammers will counter with David Kubiak (6-6. 2.39). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
