Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers lost to the River City Rascals, 3-1, on Thursday night as the Rascals complete the sweep at All Pro Freight Stadium.
For the Crushers (5-11), the loss was their fifth in a row, and they have now lost their last five at home, while the win for the Rascals (11-7) gave them their second consecutive sweep on this road trip.
Early on the game was close and it was a pitching duel through the first several innings. The Rascals struck first with a solo home run off the bat of Jackson Slaid in the third inning.
The Crushers would respond in the bottom of the fourth, when Anderson Hidalgo and Joey Burney led the inning off with back-to-back singles and Austin Prott reached on a fielder choice, erasing Burney at second. With runners on the corners, Frank Desico singled to left, scoring Hidalgo and tying the game.
Neither team scored again until the top of the eighth inning. Taylor Ard then crushed his fourth home run of the season off of Mike Devine (1-2) to lead off the inning. Then Danny Canela, the first hitter Trevor Longfellow faced, went yard with his third home run of the 2015 campaign.
The Crushers had a chance to respond in the ninth inning as they had two on with one out as Juan Sanchez reached on an error by Ard and pinch-hitter Parker Norris singled to center. The Crushers were not able to finish the rally, as Will Schierholz (1) got Ty Nelson and Emmanuel Quiles to fly out.
Lake Erie left 10 batters on the base throughout this game, a statistic that haunted the Crushers throughout this series. The two starters were very good for both teams tonight as Rascals starter Tim Koons (2-0) pitched seven innings, giving up one run and striking out six. For the Crushers, their starter Brad Zambron went 4.2 innings, giving up four hits and one run.
The Crushers will begin their three-game road series with the Florence Freedom at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Kentucky on Friday night. Left-hander Peter Gehle (1-1, 3.18) will start for the Crushers, and right-hander Casey Henn (1-3, 2.38) will counter for the Freedom. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
