Otters Drop Series Finale to Gateway

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (12-6) were defeated 13-3 in the series finale against the Gateway Grizzlies (5-14) on Thursday night. Outfielder John Schultz tallied a pair of hits for the Otters including a home run.
Evansville went ahead on a first inning RBI double from infielder Shayne Houck and increased the lead with a second inning solo home run from Schultz.
Down 2-0, Gateway cut the deficit in half with a Grant Buckner RBI groundout in the fourth.
Trailing by a run, the Grizzlies tied the game on a Ben Waldrip double in the sixth.
Even at two, Gateway went ahead in the seventh. Evansville was unable to convert a pickoff attempt into an inning ending out, and infielder Ryan Soares capitalized with a go-ahead, two-run triple to center field.
Down 4-2, Evansville brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom half but infielder Shayne Houck grounded out to end the inning.
Ahead by two, Gateway pulled away with seven runs in the eighth on their way to a 13-3 victory.
Evansville starting pitcher Preston Olson (3-1) takes the loss. The Otters righty-hander allowed four runs in 6.2 innings.
Evansville begins a three game weekend series at the Joliet Slammers on Friday, July 5.
