June 4, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things finished their three game series with the Rockford Aviators with a 4-3 extra inning loss, on June 4, 2015.
Washington pitcher Steve Messner suffered the loss for the Wild Things Thursday night in heart breaking fashion. Tim Flight started the game, and struck out six in his seven-inning performance, while allowing only 5 hits before handing over the duty to Matt Purnell. Michael Schaub earned the win for the Rockford Aviators, while David Wayne Russo earned the save.
The Rockford Aviators opened up the scoring by hitting a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning. The Wild Things responded in the bottom half of the inning with David Popkins floating a shallow line drive over the shortstop's head to plate two runs, putting the Wild Things ahead 2-1. The aviators then responded back with another sacrifice fly in the top of the third.
From the bottom half of the third inning to the bottom of the ninth inning, it was a pitching duel between both teams. Consecutive zeroes were hung by both squads to force extra innings.
In extra innings, it was nothing short of thrilling. In the eleventh, Richie Mirowski allowed a one out triple, but responded with a ground out and strikeout to get out of the jam. In the twelfth, Tim Giel let up a run to the Aviators, which put the pressure on the Wild Things to score. In the bottom half of the inning, Jeudy Valdez knocked a base hit to left field, which scored Maxx Garrett, to retie the game. In the thirteenth, Steve Messner let up a run, which again put the pressure on the Wild Things to get a run across. In the bottom half of the 13th, the Wild Things were unable to get a run across as Mende was caught stealing second, and on the following pitch Lee Orr struck out to end the game.
