AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers recorded their first shutout of the season on Friday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium, defeating the Gateway Grizzlies 2-0 in the opener of a six-game homestand.

Matt Smith blanked the Grizzlies over seven innings, recording his second win over the Grizzlies in six days and his team leading third of the season. He struck out four while allowing three hits and two walks in the victory.

The offense for the Crushers came off the bat of shortstop Jodam Rivera, who hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the first, and singled home Wayne Bond in the fifth to pick up both RBIs for Lake Erie.

Alberto Rolon pitched the final two frames to finish things off for Lake Erie, striking out two Grizzlies along the way to his fifth save.

Mark Brackman pitched a complete game for the Grizzlies but took the loss, falling to 1-2.

The Crushers (8-11) and Grizzlies (12-8) play the second of the three-game set tomorrow, with Richard Barrett (1-1, 2.38) on the hill for Gateway and Esmelvin Jimenez (2-1, 5.06) for the Crushers. Both pitchers will be making their first start. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.

EXTRA SWINGS:

- Jodam Rivera's homerun in the first was his first since July 28, 2009

- The contest featured a combined total of just nine hits, five for Gateway and four for the Crushers

- The Crushers wore tie-dyed jerseys as part of a Retro Night Theme
