Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Miners continued to roll Friday night as they defeated Windy City, 4-2, at Rent One Park. Jereme Milons sparked the offense when he led off the game with a home run, and Nate Hall added two hits and two RBIs agaisnt his former team. Brett Scarpetta turned in his best performance of the young season and earned his second win of the year. Scarpetta scattered seven hits in eight scoreless innings, the longest outing of his career. He also struck out a season-high eight batters, issuing just one walk. Southern Illinois moved to 16-4 on the season with the win, and extended its first place lead to four games.

Scarpetta lowered his ERA from 4.98 to 3.64 while moving to 2-2 on the year.

Southern Illinois led the entire way. Jereme Milons led off the first inning with his team-leading fifth home run of the year. Brad Netzel added two hits in the game, including a two-out triple in the 7th inning. Stellar defense and pitching were the lead story Friday night.

ThunderBolts southpaw Matt Jernstad was coming off his first career complete game shutout win over the Miners in his last outing in Windy City. However, Friday night would be a much different story as Southern Illinois scratched across four runs on seven hits through Jernstad's seven innings of work. The lefty now leads the Frontier League in strikeouts (39) and innings pitched (34.0), passing Miners starter Joe Augustine in both categories.

Brent DeFoor came on in the top of the 9th inning and earned his third save of the season, but it wasn't easy. Mike Damchuk started the inning by allowing a lead-off home run to J.T. Restko. DeFoor got the go-ahead run, Gilbert Mejia, to ground out softly to Will Block to end the game.

Dustin Brader (2-0, 2.30) will be on the hill for the Miners against ThunderBolts RHP Ryan Quigley (2-1. 5.49) on Saturday. It will be a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from Rent One Park, where Southern Illinois will be looking to take two straight from Windy City and four out of five from the Bolts on the season. It will be Bark at the Park Night as all fans are invited to bring their dogs to the game.
