Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie offense exploded for eight runs and 16 hits at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday night, as they swept the Evansville Otters, with an 8-0 victory.
For the Crushers, (36-35) the six game winning streak is their longest of the season, and puts them over .500 for the first time this season, while the loss for Evansville (26-46) was their fourth in their last five games.
Jereme Milons started the bottom of the first inning with a triple and scored the game's first run moments later on Patrick Norris's single.
The Crushers wasted no time adding to their advantage, as they scored four times, getting all four runs with two outs in the bottom of the second inning to pull away. Jodam Rivera and Evan Sharpley began the inning with back-to-back singles. Evansville's Dan Marcacci (4-2) then struck out the next two batters before surrendering a run scoring single to Milons. Norris followed with a two-run double and scored on Andrew Davis's two-bagger.
Lake Erie added single runs in third, sixth and the seventh. Jason Taylor provided the run in the third inning with a solo homer, his fifth of the season. Robby Kuzdale and Milons stroked back-to-back doubles with two outs in the sixth inning, and Davis came home on Taylor's double in the seventh to plate the game's final run.
While Lake Erie's offense took center stage, right hander Thomas Campbell (3-0) put on quite a performance as well, tossing six scoreless innings of two hit ball to score the victory. In two starts at All Pro Freight Stadium this season, Campbell is 2-0, in 12 scoreless innings of work. Kelyn Schellenberg (3) tossed allowed just a pair of hits while blanking the Otters over three innings of relief to get the save.
The shutout victory was Lake Erie's third of the season. Marcacci took the loss for the Otters, allowing seven runs on 14 hits over five and two-thirds.
Every batter in the Lake Erie starting lineup hit safely at least once, and five Crushers hit safely multiple times. Milons and Davis each recorded three hits apiece to lead the Crushers, while Norris, Taylor, and Sharpley delivered two hits. The Crushers hit .404 (44-for-109) in the series, and outscored the Otters, 29-6.
The Crushers are still a game and a half behind the Traverse City Beach Bums for the final playoff spot in the Frontier League's Eastern Division.
The Crushers are off on Monday, but will begin a three game series against the Florence Freedom at All Pro Freight Stadium on Tuesday night. Right hander Josh Roberts (8-4, 3.87) will start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
