Wild Things Drop Series Finale to Freedom, 3-2

Florence, KY - Despite attempting to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, dropped their series finale to the Florence Freedom, 3-2.

Washington scored their first of the game in the top of the second inning, when an RBI groundout by catcher Blake Ochoa drove in designated hitter Estee Harris. With that run, the team broke a scoreless streak that had lasted twenty-seven innings.

Florence tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, when an RBI double by center fielder Drew Rundle drove in catcher Jeff Dunbar. The Freedom took the lead in the third inning on an RBI single by shortstop Junior Arrojo.

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Washington attempted to make a comeback and cut the deficit to just one run. Ochoa earned his second RBI of the game on a single that drove in right fielder Luis Rivera, but that would be the final run the team would score.

Wild Things starting pitcher Jhonny Montoya (2-6) spent six innings on the mound, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits. Montoya walked three batters and struck out six. Closer Taylor Wulf finished the game for Washington, pitching one inning and allowing no hits, with one strikeout.

Freedom starter Jeff Frost (0-5) pitched three innings, allowing one run (earned) with no hits. Frost walked two and struck out two. Brandon Mathes finished the game for Florence, pitching the final inning and allowing one run (earned) on two hits. Mathes walked one batter and had two strikeouts.

The Wild Things head to Evansville on Tuesday, August 9, for a three-game series against the Otters. Game time is 7:35 p.m., with pre-game coverage starting at7:25 on WJPA 95.3 FM. The Wild Things return home on Friday, August 12, for a six-game homestand.
