Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI-The Traverse City Beach Bums used pitching and defense as they beat the Southern Illinois Miners in a potential playoff preview in front of 3,618 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 2-1.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Beach Bums charged right back to take the lead thanks to a run-scoring double courtesy of left fielder J.T. Hall, who had five hits in the series against the Miners. Designated hitter Chase Burch drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout to give the Beach Bums a 2-1 lead.
The story in this contest was the performance of Beach Bums pitchers David Nathanson and Scott Mueller. Nathanson pitched an impressive 7.2 innings as he kept Miners hitters off-balance for most of the contest. His only blemish was allowing an RBI-single to Southern Illinois first baseman Ernie Banks in the fourth inning.
Mueller came on with two outs and a runner on third base to face Miners second baseman Justin Randall, who hit a hard ground ball that appeared headed into center field for a game-tying base hit. The Beach Bums closer would quickly drop his glove to the ground to stop the ground ball on its way up-the-middle, and threw to first base to retire Randall and end the inning.
Nathanson (2-1) earned his second win with his performance in the contest. The victory makes Nathanson the first career 25-game winner as a Traverse City Beach Bum pitcher. Southern Illinois starting pitcher David Harden (5-5) suffered his fourth straight loss after allowing two runs in five innings, his fifth of the season. Mueller pitched the final 1.1 innings to pick up his sixteenth save of 2011.
With the win, the Beach Bums improve to 38-34, while Southern Illinois falls to 43-28 on the season. Vargas and Hall each had two hits to lead the Beach Bums offense.
The Beach Bums hit the road for a six-game roadtrip beginning with a three-game series with the Normal Cornbelters on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. Left hander David Deminsky starts for the Beach Bums. The Budweiser Pregame Show starts at 7:40 p.m. on Sunny Country 101.9 FM and streaming online through tcbeachbums.com.
