Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Four Syracuse Crunch players notched multi-point games as the team scored a season-high five goals on their way to trampling the Binghamton Senators, 5-1, tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Adam Erne tallied one goal and two assists in his return after missing the last 14 games to injury. Mike Angelidis also recorded a goal and two helpers, while Jeff Tambellini picked up a goal and an assist and Matt Peca earned two assists.
The victory improves the Crunch to 10-6-2-1 on the season and gives the team a 3-0 lead in the 10-game season series with the Senators.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis made 28 saves on 29 shots. Senators netminder Matt O'Connor allowed five goals on 29 attempts. Syracuse scored the contest's only power-play goal, as they went 1-for-6 on the man-advantage, and were successful on all six penalty kills.
Erne opened scoring for the Crunch at the 8:02 mark of the first period. After receiving the puck from Angelidis, Erne dangled around a Senators defenseman and threw it back across the slot for the captain. The pass was poorly intercepted by Binghamton and ended up in the net. Daniel Walcott recorded the secondary assist on the opening marker.
Four minutes later, Syracuse struck again. Jeff Tambellini passed back for Angelidis to score from the right goal post. Erne was credited with the secondary helper on the eventual game-winner.
Syracuse scored twice in the third frame before seeing a response from Binghamton. Just 1:06 in, Matt Taormina netted his second power-play goal this season. Anthony DeAngelo fed Taormina, who lit the lamp from the top of the right circle. Peca nabbed a point on the play. At the 8:22 mark, Tambellini contributed to the scoring. Angelidis slid a slick pass across the goalmouth for Tambellini to fire in the back door. Erne tallied his third point of the night on the goal.
Just past the halfway mark of the period, the Senators ruined Gudlevskis' hope of a second consecutive shutout. During 4-on-4 play, Chris Carlisle passed ahead to start a 2-on-1 rush. Ryan Dzingel sauced one to Matt Puempel, who fired over a laid out Luke Witkowski.
With thirty seconds remaining in the third, Witkowski added one more to the Crunch's final tally. Witkowski's centering pass from the end boards was intended for Mike Blunden, but banked off Dzingel's stick and was redirected into Binghamton's net. Peca picked up the assist.
The Crunch are back at the War Memorial tomorrow to host the Utica Comets at 7 p.m.
