Crunch Edge Phantoms 5-4 in Overtime

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch edged the Adirondack Phantoms, 5-4, in overtime tonight at the War Memorial Arena.

The victory puts the Crunch on a four-game winning streak and improves their overall record to 22-23-4-5 on the season. They are 2-0-0-0 in the season series with the Phantoms.

Crunch goaltender Cedrick Desjardins stopped 32 of 36 shots in victory, while Phantoms goaltender Yann Danis stopped 32 of 37. The Crunch were able to convert on one of six power-play opportunities. The penalty kill unit allowed two goals on four Phantoms man-advantages.

The Crunch and Phantoms both scored once in the first period to take them into the first intermission tied 1-1. Tanner Richard passed ahead to Dana Tyrell, who beat Danis on the breakaway with a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net at the 7:25 mark. The Phantoms tied the game up with 2:32 left in the period when Nick Cousins beat Desjardins with a power-play goal. Desjardins made the initial save on a Kyle Flanagan shot, but Cousins was able to score on the rebound. Ben Holmstrom was credited with the secondary assist.

Syracuse scored three times in the second period to take a 4-1 lead over the Phantoms. Mike Angelidis passed up to P.C. Labrie, who one-timed a shot from the top of the right circle. Philippe Paradis redirected Labrie's shot past Danis to give the Crunch the go-ahead goal at the 11:29 mark. The Crunch extended their lead 14:58 into the second. After being fed by Richard Panik, Richard took the puck down the ice and passed across the crease to Tyrell who scored his second goal of the game. Jon DiSalvatore further increased the lead just 18 seconds later. Danis made the save on Brett Connolly's shot, but DiSalvatore was able to find the puck and score on the rebound. Cedric Paquette earned a point for the secondary assist.

The Phantoms scored three goals in the third period to send the game into overtime. Flanagan picked up his second point of the game when he scored from the slot on the power play at the 8:43 mark. Brandon Alderson and Mark Alt both assisted on the play. Alt cut the Crunch's lead to one goal 58 seconds later with assists from Oliver Lauridsen and Rob Bordson. The puck hit Desjardins, but fluttered over him and into the net. Tye McGinn tied the game with 1:59 remaining in the third with assists from Bruno Gervais and Brandon Manning to force overtime.

Richard Panik scored the game-wining goal on the power play after Luke Witkowski drew a hooking penalty. Panik received a cross-ice feed from DiSalvatore and one-timed a shot from the bottom of the right circle at the 1:37 mark of the extra frame. Matt Taormina recorded the secondary assist.

The Crunch travel to Glens Falls Sunday for a rematch with the Phantoms at 5 p.m.
