Syracuse Crunch News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch have secured their spot in the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs with a 6-2 victory over the Binghamton Devils tonight at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

Alex Volkov and Dennis Yan both potted two goals to help lead the team towards their 14th Calder Cup Playoffs berth in franchise history. The win advances Syracuse to 37-19-3-4 on the season and 6-1-0-0 in the 10-game season series against Binghamton.

Goaltender Louis Domingue stopped 28-of-30 shots in net for the Crunch. Eddie Lack turned aside 27-of-33 for the Devils. Syracuse converted on 2-of-5 power play opportunities and stopped 4-of-5 Binghamton man-advantages.

The Crunch opened scoring 7:19 into the first period. After Lack made the save on Erik Cernak's point shot, Matthew Peca slid the rebound through the five-hole for Volkov to wrap around the cage and sweep in.

Syracuse doubled their lead with 4:41 remaining in the opening frame. Mitchell Stephens stole the puck behind the net and redirected it back towards the left post where Yan chipped it in.

The Devils stole one back during 4-on-4 play 1:55 into the middle frame. Steven Santini's right point shot was deflected in front of Domingue by John Quenneville. Colton White earned the secondary helper.

Syracuse went back up by two with Yan's second goal of the night halfway through the second period. The rookie picked off a pass in the Crunch's zone, flew down the right wing and beat Lack with a snipe off the crossbar from the circle. With 6:40 remaining in the stanza, the Crunch made it 4-1. Stephens backhanded a quick feed across the crease for Kevin Lynch to one-time home for his 10th of the season. Daniel Walcott picked up a point on the play.

Just 41 seconds into the third period, the Devils scored on the power play. Christoph Bertschy sent the puck down to the goal line for Bracken Kearns. He sauced it across the crease for Quenneville to chip in his second of the night and pull the Devils back within two.

At the 8:34 mark, Volkov earned his second goal of the game. After two cross-zone passes from Mathieu Joseph and Carter Verhaeghe, Volkov hammered in a power-play goal from the right circle.

Syracuse added one more late in the frame while on the man-advantage to claim a definitive victory. Peca fed it down low to Erik Condra. The Captain sent it to the bottom of the right circle for Olivier Archambault to one-time past Lack.

The Crunch travel to face the Springfield Thunderbirds on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
