HICKORY, NC - Luke Tendler's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Hickory an 8-7 win over the BlueClaws in the first game of the second half, Thursday night at LP Frans Stadium.
The BlueClaws (0-1, 33-36) have now dropped seven of their last eight games while Hickory (1-0, 45-24) handed the BlueClaws their fourth walk-off loss of the season.
Hickory tied the game with two runs off All-Star reliever Joey DeNato - a two-out RBI double by Jose Cardona and an RBI single by Michael De Leon. Matt Hockenberry came on for the ninth inning and allowed a triple to Jose Trevino before Tendler's RBI single.
Herlis Rodriguez had two hits and three RBIs for the BlueClaws. Scott Kingery, playing in his first professional game after the Phillies drafted him in the 2nd round from Arizona, went 2-5. Kyle Martin, a 4th round pick from South Carolina also making his pro debut with the BlueClaws, went 1-4.
Hockenberry (1-2) took the loss, allowing the winning run in the ninth. Scott Williams (2-0) retired all six batters he faced and earned the win.
The BlueClaws took the lead in the seventh inning, going ahead on a SAC fly by Herlis Rodriguez and adding to the lead on a solo home run by Damek Tomscha, his third of the season.
Lakewood jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, scoring three times in the first inning off Hickory starter Nick Gardewine. An RBI single by Damek Tomscha put the BlueClaws up 1-0. Cord Sandberg then grounded into a double play which allowed the second run to score, and Kyle Martin, making his BlueClaws debut, singled to right to put the BlueClaws up 3-0.
Hickory, off Tyler Viza, scored twice in the second and twice more in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead before the BlueClaws, on a two-run home run by Rodriguez, went back ahead 5-4. Hickory tied the game off Viza in the bottom of the fifth inning on a ground-out by Jairo Beras, which made the game 5-5.
