R'Dogs Blanked by Drive 4-0 in Second-Half Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs were shut out 4-0 by the Greenville Drive in the opener of a five-game series and the first game of the season's second half Thursday night at Fluor Field at the West End.

Greenville (1-0, 39-32) took command of the game in the first inning, sending eight men to the plate against Charleston's starting pitcher Justin Kamplain. Yoan Moncada led off the frame with a double to left and then scored on Michael Chavis' double to right. Chavis advanced to third base on a ground out and then came home later in the inning on an infield single by Javier Guerra. The Drive left the bases loaded, but their 2-0 lead was enough to make the difference in the game.

In the seventh inning, Moncada hit a one-out single. He proceeded to steal second and third before scoring on a passed ball by the catcher Collin Slaybaugh to make it 3-0. Greenville added one more run of insurance to their lead with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Mike Meyers hit an RBI double to plate Nick Longhi, who doubled earlier in the frame.

Kamplain (2-9) only lasted 3 2/3 innings and took the loss for the RiverDogs, despite bouncing back after giving up two runs in the first. Jeffry Fernandez (2-5) pitched six scoreless innings, only allowed three hits, and struck out a season-high six batters in his second win of the season. Kuehl McEachern earned his fifth save by pitching three scoreless innings of relief.

The RiverDogs (0-1, 34-37) went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the loss. Jorge Mateo went 1-for-4 and extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single in the eighth inning.
