Asheville Tourists News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC-- Despite scoring runs in six of their nine trips to the plate, the Asheville Tourists found themselves on the wrong side of a 9-8 final score Thursday night in Kannapolis. Leading 8-5 entering the home half of the ninth inning, things appeared to look in the Tourists favor; however, the Intimidators were keen on acquiring their second walk-off win of the season--and they did just that.
Eddy Alvarez walked to begin the frame. Hunter Jones then followed with a single. Asheville's closer Josh Michalec struck out Louie Lechich but allowed base hits to the next two Intimidators. With the lead down to one, Brett Austin belted a double to left-center plating the tying and winning runs to leave the Tourists stunned. It was Kannapolis' second four-run inning of the game.
The Tourists jumped out to a hot start. Asheville scored two in the second with an RBI single from Luis Jean and a sacrifice fly by Dom Nunez. Forrest Wall made it 3-0 with a solo Home Run in the third and Nunez added an RBI double in the fourth to make it 4-0.
After the home team tied the game with a four-run fourth inning, Omar Carrizales put the Tourists back in front with a solo Home Run in the seventh. Again Kannapolis tied the game in the bottom of the inning. The momentum swung back in Asheville's favor after Nunez clubbed a solo Home Run in the eighth. Asheville then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on RBI base hits by Drew Weeks and Wes Rogers.
Josh Fuentes and Jean each finished with three base hits and the three Home Runs hit by Asheville tied a season-high. None of it seemed to matter as the Tourists left CMC-NorthEast stadium dejected and wondering how this game slipped away.
