Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads cruised to the 8-1 victory against the Delmarva Shorebirds, before 1,076 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night . With the win, the 'Dads will remain tied for 1st place in the Northern Division Second Half Standings with the Hagerstown Suns.
Hickory (18-13, 54-46) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning against RHP Zach Davies (L, 4-3). With one away, RF Jordan Akins singled himself on base. Akins took off for second too soon and found himself in a run down in between first and second base. However, SS Sammie Starr threw the ball away during the run down, enabling Akins to get to second on another miscue. After a SS Luis Sardinas base hit moved Akins to third, 1B Trever Adams brought him home with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, making it 1-0.
The 'Dads opened up the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. 2B Rougned Odor started the stanza with a triple to the right-field corner. He quickly came home on an RBI single by LF Zach Cone. Cone advanced to second base on a CF Chris Grayson walk, before C Jorge Alfaro brought them both home on a two-run double. Alfaro took third on a single by DH Alejandro Selen, and then Akins brought him home on an RBI fielder's choice, stretching the lead to 5-0.
After four scoreless frames by LHP Andrew Faulkner (W, 3-3), the Shorebirds (12-18, 40-59) got on the board against him in the top of the fifth. With one down, SS Sammie Starr reached on a single, and then came in on an RBI double by CF Mikey Planeta, making it 5-1. That was all Faulkner would allow, however, keeping Delmarva to just one run through his season-high seven innings on the night.
Hickory stretched the lead with three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. A one-out base hit by Sardinas started the charge, before he moved to second base on a passed ball. Adams then pulled an RBI double to the left-field wall, plating Sardinas. After a pop out and a walk by Cone, Grayson unloaded a two-run triple to right-center field, scoring Adams and Cone for the 8-1 advantage.
After Faulkner's seven frames on the mound, RHP Taylor Dennis and RHP Daniel Lopez each followed with a scoreless inning apiece, closing the 8-1 win for Hickory.
