CHARLESTON, SC - Greg Ross threw eight solid innings and got the win as the Rome Braves held off the Charleston RiverDogs for an 8-2 win in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Monday night with 2,257 in attendance.
The first place RiverDogs fall to 56-42 (17-14 in the second half) with the loss while the Braves improve to 35-66 (17-14).
After two scoreless innings, Charleston broke on top in the third with two runs. Kelvin De Leon knocked in one run with single and scored the second run later in the frame. Rome bounced back in the fourth when Will Skinner drilled a three-run double into right that made the score 3-2.
Both starters settled down after each team scored. Brett Gerritse threw six innings for the RiverDogs and allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Ross was just a little better, giving up only two runs on eight hits. He walked only one and struck out six.
In the seventh, William Beckwith provided the Braves with insurance by roping a three-run double into left-center, stretching the lead to four runs. Rome added an unearned run in the eighth and Robby Hefflinger blasted a solo homer to left in the ninth to cap off the scoring. Former College of Charleston Cougar pitcher David Peterson closed the game with a scoreless ninth.
