STAT OF THE DAY: The Shorebirds are 6-2 since the arrival of Jerome Pena, who was added from Aberdeen on July 14. He has played in seven of the eight games. He has reached in six of seven games and has eight hits and seven RBIs.
PREVIEW: The Shorebirds have won back-to-back series for just the second time this season (3-1 over Hickory and 3-1 over West Virginia). Yesterday afternoon, the Shorebirds scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to victory behind a strong 6.2 inning start from Matt Taylor (fourth win). The Shorebirds have won six of their last eight games for the first time this season. With 40 games left (plus one suspended game), the Shorebirds are just 4.5 games out of first place.
A WINNING MONTH: The Shorebirds are 11-9 in the month of July after going 8-21 in May and 8-17 in June. Their only above .500 month this season was April (13-11). The Shorebirds are tied for the best month of July in the Northern Division with Hagerstown (11-9) and Lakewood (11-9). Asheville and Charleston lead the league with 12 wins in July.
HR BALL: The Shorebirds hit four home runs in the most recent against West Virginia. The Shorebirds have hit 19 home runs in 29 games in the second half. They hit just 32 long balls in 69 games in the first half. The last seven home runs that the Shorebirds have hit have come from seven different players.
SAWYER'S INCREDIBLE 2ND HALF: In 23 games in the second half, Wynston Sawyer is batting .333 (28-for-84) with two home runs and 17 RBIs. Sawyer has seven RBIs (3 multi-RBI games) in his last five played.
LAST TURN THROUGH THE ROTATION: During the last turn through the rotation (six man), the Shorebirds starters had a 4.06 ERA. If you take out the only short outing (Williams Louico - 1.1, 7 ER), the five starters (who all won) had a 2.15 ERA during the last trip through the rotation.
3 STRAIGHT SERIES: The last time the Shorebirds won three straight series was between April 19 and May 3 of 2011 when they beat Augusta, Savannah and Charleston.
