CHARLESTON - Hickory ratcheted up three runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 5-4 win over the Charleston RiverDogs in front of 2,377 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Tuesday night.

With the victory, the Crawdads improve to 28-23, 68-52 overall, while Charleston fell to 22-29, 48-73 overall.

Hickory assumed a 1-0 lead in the fourth off Charleston starter Mike Gipson, though it was aided by two Charleston errors. Christian Villanueva's fly ball was lost in the lights by Ramon Flores allowing him to reach second, while Alejandro Selen reached on an infield single, but the throw to first by third baseman Garrison Lassiter sailed into the right field bullpen plating Villanueva for the lead.

That's all Gipson (0-1) allowed in 4.0 innings of work in his first appearance with Charleston since April 16. The former Florida Atlantic standout walked a pair and fanned five in the hard luck loss.

Yobanny Reyes entered for Charleston in the fifth and surrendered three Hickory tallies for a 4-0 deficit. The Crawdads loaded the bases with one out, and Tomas Telis chopped a two-run single to right field, but all three runs ended up scoring when the ball rolled through right-fielder Kelvin De Leon and to the warning track.

Charleston found its offensive groove against Hickory starter Ben Henry in the bottom half, plating three runs for a 4-3 score. Jose Mojica singled, Garrison Lassiter doubled him to third, and Jose Toussen brought in both with a single to right-centerfield. Shane Brown followed with a walk, and Kelvin De Leon was hit by a pitch to load the sacks. With one down, Kevin Mahoney legged out a RBI fielder's choice to score Toussen.

Henry (5-2) still worked 5.0 innings in his third start of the season to get the victory, giving up three runs on four hits, while walking a season-high five and striking out four.

The Crawdads put runners at first and second in the sixth for Jhonny Gomez, who reached on a fielder's choice, but the relay throw from second ended up in Charleston's fourth error in three innings scoring Jonathan Roof all the way from second, upping the advantage to 5-3.

Andrew Doyle pitched a perfect sixth inning, while Northern Division All-Star Roman Mendez worked 2.0 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts, but the Dogs rallied against Francisco Mendoza in the ninth.

With two outs, Toussen ripped a single up the middle, took second on a passed ball and scored on a Brown RBI single, cutting the deficit to 5-4. However, Flores fanned with Brown at first to end the game and give Mendoza his second save in as many night and third of the year.

Game four of the series acts as the finale, with Charleston pitching southpaw Vidal Nuno (1-0, 2.40 ERA) against former Clemson standout Will Lamb (NR), a second round pick in this year's draft by the Rangers who will make his SAL debut.
