Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Grasshoppers pounded out 16 hits against Augusta GreenJackets pitching - four of them leaving the ballpark - to come away with a 13-2 blowout win over the GreenJackets on Tuesday night.
Earning the first lead had been a good omen for the GreenJackets on this road trip, as Augusta was 4-0 entering Tuesday's game when they gained the first lead of the contest. That wasn't the case in this one as the GreenJackets got a 1-0 lead in the third on Chris Lofton's RBI single before things got out of hand. Things went downhill for the GreenJackets - and fast - as Greensboro scored the next nine runs of the game.
In the bottom of the third, the Grasshoppers tied the game at one on a solo homer from Noah Perio. The Grasshoppers took a lead they wouldn't lose by touching up Mike Kickham for five runs in the fourth. The GreenJackets couldn't turn a double play on a Ryan Fisher grounder that allowed the go-ahead run to score and put the 'Hoppers up 2-1. Isaac Galloway's RBI single made it 3-1 while Perio followed with his second homer of the night - a three-run blast - to push Greensboro's advantage to five runs.
Kickham (4-8) departed after Perio's second home run, allowing six runs - but just one earned - on six hits and a walk while striking out two.
The Grasshoppers added three more in the fifth on Wilfredo Gimenez's RBI groundout and a two-run single from Ryan Fisher before the GreenJackets answered with a Devin Harris sacrifice fly in the sixth to cut Greensboro's lead to 9-2. The Grasshoppers would score the final four runs of the game though, adding two more in the sixth on Christian Yelich's RBI double and Jacob Realmuto's run-scoring groundout. Back-to-back solo home runs by Mark Canha and Realmuto in the eighth pushed Greensboro's lead to 13-2.
James Leverton (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Grasshoppers, firing 5.1 innings and allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out three.
The GreenJackets and Grasshoppers face a quick turnaround for Wednesday's matinee series finale with Ryan Bradley (2-1, 4.11) getting the ball for Augusta against Alex Caldera (1-0, 4.09). First pitch from Greensboro comes at 12:35 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 12:20, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
