BlueClaws Sweep Doubleheader from Shorebirds

Salisbury, Md. - The Lakewood BlueClaws clipped the Shorebirds in game one, 2-1, and then defeated the Shorebirds 5-3 in game two of the doubleheader on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park.

The Shorebirds scored their lone run in game one of the doubleheader in the fifth inning. Riley Hornback scored as Lakewood threw down to second to try and catch Mike Mooney, who got caught up in a rundown, allowing Hornback to sprint down the line and score.

With the score locked up at 1-1, Lakewood loaded the bases against reliever Ryan Palsha in the seventh inning. On a 3-2 pitch to Cameron Rupp, Palsha delivered high to force in the winning run.

Jake Cowan hurled six strong innings in game one. He scattered eight hits and allowed just one run.

The Shorebirds scored first in game two. Michael Ohlman connected on an RBI single up the middle to score Joe Oliveira in the first inning.

Lakewood pulled even in the second on an RBI single by Carlos Perdomo.

The Shorebirds regained the lead in the fourth inning. Ohlman and Jacob Julius drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Two batters later, Riley Hornback stung a single into center field to score Ohlman.

Lakewood exploded for four runs in the fourth to take their first lead. Jeff Lanning hit a solo homer to leadoff the fourth, which tied the game at 2-2. The 'Claws added three more runs including RBIs by Bill Rice and Carlos Perdomo.

In the seventh, Ty Kelly hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Mike Mooney from second to cut the deficit to 5-3. Lakewood reliever Jay Johnson got Jeremy Nowak to line out to third to end the game.

Mike Wright struck out five and scattered seven hits and five runs over 3.1 innings in his debut.

Cameron Roth tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just one hit.

The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play the series finale on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Matt Bywater is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
