
Crawdads Drop Shorebirds 7-6 with Run in Ninth

Hickory, N.C. - After the Delmarva Shorebirds (46-54, 11-19) scored two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, the Crawdads scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Shorebirds 7-6 at L.P. Frans Stadium on Sunday night. The Shorebirds last three losses have all been walk off wins for the opposition.
Hickory plated two early runs in the first inning. Jurickson Profar hit a single up the middle to open the inning. Then, Jake Skole walked to put runners at first and second. Tomas Telis grounded out to move Profar to third. Then, Andrew Clark picked up his 50th RBI on a groundout to first. Scott Copeland's second wild pitch of the inning scored Skole.
In the second, Jeremy Nowak sparked the Shorebirds with a double through the left-center field alley. Nowak tagged up to third on a deep fly out by Michael Ohlman. Then, Joe Oliveira lined a single into left field to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Crawdads extended the lead in the bottom of the second. Kellin Deglan hit a sacrifice fly RBI to score Josh Richmond. Later in the inning, Profar and Skole connected on two-out RBIs to lift the Crawdads to a 5-2 lead.
In the fourth, Ohlman hit a one out single and advanced to third on a double by Oliveira. Then, Rosa grounded out to short, which scored Ohlman to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Shorebirds trimmed the deficit to 5-4 in the fifth inning. Mikey Planeta led off with a single and stole second base. With two outs, second baseman Odubel Herrera misplayed a grounder, allowing Planeta to score. Then, with runners at first and third, Nowak drew a throw down to second while Kelly sprinted home from third.
Trailing 6-4 in the ninth, the Shorebirds mounted a rally. Brenden Webb hit a one out double towards right-center field. Kelly followed with a hard hit single into center field to cut the deficit to 6-5. Then, Nowak and Ohlman followed with singles against Jimmy Reyes to load the bases. After Oliveira struck out for out number two, Rosa drew a bases loaded walk to force in the tying run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Profar led off with a check swing single in the infield. He advanced to second on a walk to Jake Skole. Then, Tomas Telis placed a bunt down the third baseline and Kelly picked up the ball and skipped a threw down the right field line to allow Profar to score the game winner.
Shorebirds starter Copeland allowed five runs in the first, but tossed three scoreless innings to complete his outing. D.J. Ferguson tossed two relief innings and allowed one run.
Jimmy Reyes earned the win while Travis Strong, who pitched the eighth and ninth innings, was saddled with the loss. Strong retired the Crawdads in order in the eighth.
Joe Oliveira led a 13-hit offensive attack with a career high three hits. Nowak, Ohlman and Planeta each had two hits.
The Shorebirds play game three of the series on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. LHP Matt Bywater will make his second start of the year.
