Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - Making his first start as a Savannah Sand Gnat, RHP Michael Hebert was brilliant over six shutout innings to send the Gnats to a 4-2 victory over the Lexington Legends Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (19-11/58-41) have won four games in a row.
Hebert had made one relief appearance for Savannah in 2011 and two in 2010, but cruised in his first South Atlantic League start on Sunday. He retired the first eight hitters he saw and then after C Roberto Pena's single with two outs in the third, set down eight more batters in a row. All told, he threw six innings with nine strikeouts, just two singles allowed, both to Pena, and no walks to earn his first win as a Sand Gnat.
The Gnats offense scored in three of the first four innings against Lexington starter Alex Sogard to build a 4-0 lead. In the first, CF Darrell Ceciliani doubled and scored on RF Rafael Fernandez's RBI groundout to put Savannah in front 1-0. In the third inning, LF Alonzo Harris singled and went to third on a beautiful bunt single by Ceciliani along the third baseline to put runners at the corners. SS Wilfredo Tovar brought home a Harris with a groundout before Fernandez singled up the middle, driving home Ceciliani, for his second RBI of the game and a 3-0 Gnats' advantage.
In the fourth, Harris ripped a two-out RBI triple into the right field corner to put the Gnats up 4-0. Harris, who was 2-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored, has hit safely in nine straight games going 12-for-33 (.364) over his current streak with six RBI.
The Legends (11-19/46-54) got on the board with a run against Guillaume Leduc in the seventh and drew within two at 4-2, on an unearned run in the eighth. After Leduc walked two men to put the tying runs aboard, reliever Hamilton Bennett slammed the door shut by retiring the final four batters of the game for his 9th save.
The Gnats will start RHP Gonzalez Germen (6-5, 3.61) against RHP Mike Foltynewicz (5-8, 4.29) Monday at 7:05 pm in game three of this four-game series with Lexington. Gates will open at 6 pm and the broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 6:50 pm.
