Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lakewood, NJ - The Augusta GreenJackets left more men on the Jersey Shore than MTV's Snooki on Sunday afternoon, stranding 12 on the basepaths in a 5-1 loss to the Lakewood BlueClaws.
The GreenJackets took an early lead, sending seven to the plate in the second inning off Lakewood starter Ervis Manzanillo. Carlos Willoughby's bases-loaded RBI single put the GreenJackets ahead 1-0, but Chris Lofton struck out to end the inning and the GreenJackets missed out on the chance to add further runs.
Augusta had runners on in every inning but two - and had plenty of men on thanks to eight hits, five walks and a Lakewood error - but couldn't come through with the big hit. Only one of Augusta's eight hits went for extra bases - Josh Mazzola's seventh-inning double.
Lakewood didn't waste time in reclaiming the lead, sending eight to the plate against Taylor Rogers in the home half of the second and scoring three times. Rogers surrendered four hits and a walk in the inning, with Cameron Rupp singling home the tying run and Bill Rice following with a two-run single on the next pitch from Rogers to put the BlueClaws up 3-1. After that, Rogers settled down to retire 10 of the next 11 he faced before allowing back-to-back walks in the fifth.
Rogers (7-9) fired five innings and allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three.
Lendy Castillo (2-1) relieved Manzanillo in the fifth after Manzanillo put the tying run on base with the last of his season-high five walks. Castillo shut the GreenJackets down in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four.
Rupp brought home another off Drew Bowlin in the sixth with a sacrifice fly and capped his three-RBI game for the BlueClaws with a run-scoring single in the eighth off Mario Rodriguez to put Lakewood up 5-1.
The GreenJackets will try and bounce back on Monday night, sending Mike Kickham (2-5, 4.71) to the mound for the first time on the current road trip to face Lakewood's David Buchanan (10-5, 3.62). First pitch from Lakewood comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
