Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Crawdads rode 13 hits to a 6-2 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday night.
The 'Dads got things started early, scoring three runs in the first. Jonathan Ornelas led off the home half of the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Matt Whatley hit a single to right that brought Ornelas around to score. Sam Huff followed up with a two-run homerun, his tenth of the season, which is tied for the lead in Minor League Baseball. Huff has homered in his past four games and six of his past seven.
Lakewood got a run across in the top of the second on a wild pitch by Crawdads starter Jean Casanova.
The Crawdads offense added on another three runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead. A single by Sam Huff and a double by Sherten Apostel put runners in scoring position for Jose Almonte. Almonte singled on a line drive to left that brought Huff in to score and advance Apostel to third. Chad Smith grounded out, but Apostel was able to score on the play. Almonte came in for the inning's third run on a wild pitch.
The BlueClaws picked up a run in the fourth on a solo homerun but were unable to score any more the rest of the evening.
Casanova pitched four innings, giving up two runs and striking out five. He allowed four hits and walked two. Tai Tiedemann took over in the fifth, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings. Wes Robertson took the 'Dads the rest of the way, recording the final ten outs and giving up just one hit.
Jonathan Ornelas continued his hot start to the season, collecting three singles, a double, a stolen base, and a run scored. Matt Whatley broke out of an 0-21 slump with a three-hit night. Apostel also finished the evening with a trio of hits.
Tomorrow night the series continues with a special 5pm first pitch. Following the game, Sanctus Real will take the stage for the season's first Christian Concert thanks to the Billy Graham Training Center at the Cove, Hickory Christian Academy, and 106.9 the Light.
