LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Lexington Legends (11-10) walked off on the Greenville Drive (10-11), 3-2, in 10 innings on Friday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
In the bottom of the 10th, with the go-ahead run starting on second base, Jeison Guzman singled on a bunt to the pitcher and a throwing error by Hunter Haworth allowed Nick Hutchins to score the game-winning run to give Lexington the 3-2 victory.
Greenville got the scoring started with two runs in the third. Jordan Wren reached on a one-out single to right and moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. After a Kole Cottam walk, Triston Casas singled to left to score Wren and give the Drive the lead. A wild pitch allowed Cottam and Casas to move to second and third and Marino Campana followed with a sac fly to make it a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Drive starter Alex Scherff was dealing on the mound, as the righty faced just two above the minimum through the first 5.0 innings and totaled seven strikeouts. Lexington managed to break through in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Rubendy Jaquez drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a pair of Drive errors, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Lexington evened the game at 2-2 in the eighth. The Legends led off the inning with back-to-back singles and two batters later a walk loaded the bases with one out. A sac fly by Nathan Eaton tied the game at 2-2 and ultimately forced extra innings.
Josh Dye (1-0) recorded his first win of the season for the Legends, working 3.0 scoreless innings and allowing a lone hit with eight strikeouts against two walks. Haworth (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts against two walks in 3.0 innings pitched.
Scherff turned in his best performance of the season, going a season-long 6.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run on just one hit and one walk to go with a season-high nine strikeouts. Scherff lowered his season ERA to 1.89 and has held opposing hitters to a .185 average on the year.
Casas led the Drive at the plate again, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. It was his third multi-hit game in the last four.
Game three of the series is set for 6:35 p.m. on Saturday night. Greenville sends RHP Thaddeus Ward (0-1, 4.19 ERA) to the mound.
