Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes righthander Coby Cowgill pitched his best game as a professional on Wednesday night. In fact, he was so good he stopped a Goldeyes three-game losing streak.
He also kept the visiting Gary SouthShore RailCats from sweeping the Fish at Shaw Park.
Cowgill pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, allowing only one run on five scattered hits as he paced the Fish to a 5-1 win over the RailCats.
With the win, the Goldeyes improved top 13-18 on the season and salvaged the final game of a three-game set with Gary. The RailCats fell to 17-15.
"I was excited tonight," said Cowgill after the game. "It was my first start at home and it was great to have the fans cheering for you than cheering against you.
"We needed a deep start tonight and the goal was to go as deep as I could. (Radio announcer) Steve Schuster just told me that was my longest start as a professional. I didn't even know that. Tonight, I just went out there to throw strikes and get ahead of the hitters. That team hits the ball pretty good, but my defense tonight was outstanding. Those guys did a great job behind me."
While Cowgill was mowing down the RailCats (he had six strikeouts and gave up only one walk), the Goldeyes bats took their time. Finally, with two out in the fifth, the ball started to fall in. With Kyle Brandenburg on first, Brady Wilson doubled and the Goldeyes had a 1-0 lead. Wilson made it to third on the throw to the plate and the next hitter, Adam Heisler, beat out an infield hit to drive home Wilson. Casey Haerther then walked and Jon Weber singled to drive home Heisler. The next hitter, Josh Mazzola, singled to drive home Haerther and the Goldeyes had a 4-0 lead.
The Fish made it 5-0 in the seventh when Heisler singled, stole second and scored on a single by Mazzola
The RailCats scored a run in the eighth, but it was way too little, way too late
Brendan Lafferty replaced Cowgill in the eighth and got the final four outs to cap the win.
The Goldeyes finished with five runs on 10 hits. Heisler had a big night with three hits in four trips, two runs scored and an RBI. Mazzola had two hits and two runs batted in and was flawless at shortstop.
Goldeyes starter Cowgill (2-1, 3.65 ERA) got the win for the Goldeyes, while Gary starter Andy Roberts (0-3, 4.63 ERA) was tagged with the loss. Lafferty did not get credit for a save but he pitched a solid inning-and-a-third.
Thursday morning the Goldeyes will get on the bus and start the trek toward Sioux Falls, S.D. The Fish will play a three-game series in Sioux Falls on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Canadian right-hander Rob Nixon will get the start in the opener on Thursday while Nick Hernandez will pitch Game 2 on Friday and Matt Jackson will head to the bump for the series finale on Saturday.
The Goldeyes will return home on Monday night to face the Sioux City Explorers. Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
