Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (June 23, 2015) - After being roughed up for the first time as a professional in his last start, Wichita Wingnuts' right-hander Scott Kuzminsky responded in impressive fashion against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday. The rookie from the University of Hawaii picked up his second win of the season by tossing seven innings and allowing only a pair of runs. His offense backed him up by scoring three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh as the Wingnuts pulled away later for a 7-2 win.

In a match-up of young and talented right-handed pitchers, Kuzminsky (2-1) and reigning American Association Rookie of the Year Jeremy Strawn dueled to a scoreless tie through five innings. It was the Canaries (15-18) who would strike first. Jason Repko took the first pitch of the sixth inning and deposited it over the left field wall for his third home run of the year to make it 1-0.

The Wichita (18-12) offense responded with urgency in the bottom half against Strawn. With one out Alberto Gonzalez sparked the rally with a line drive triple into the gap. David Espinosa followed with a walk to put runners on the corners. In his first at bat since re-signing with the Wingnuts on Monday, Taylor Oldham lined a base hit up the middle to tie the score. Oldham entered in the fifth inning after first baseman Dustin Geiger was ejected at the end of the fourth. Joash Brodin, who extended his hit streak to 14 games in the second inning, drove in two more with his double into the left field corner for a 3-1 advantage. Strawn (2-4) left after the frame having struck out five batters through six innings

Sioux Falls battled to within a run in the top of the seventh. Richard Stock began the inning with a double and scored on R.J. Perucki's one out RBI single.

The game was moved out of reach by the Wingnuts in the bottom of the seventh. Luis Hernandez, who commenced the frame with a single, raced around to score on Jayce Ray's RBI triple. Ray scored himself when reliever Josh Ferrell's wild pitch scooted past catcher Tyler Shoves. With T.J. Mittelstaedt and Espinosa on base, Oldham laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded cleanly by Shoves and then fired wildly into right field allowing both runners to cross the plate.  By the time the inning ended the margin had grown to 7-2.

Al Yevoli allowed only a single in the eighth inning before turning it over to Brad Mincey in the ninth. The right-hander retired the side in order to put the finishing touches on the ballgame.

After an off day Wednesday, the Wingnuts will continue their schedule with a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 5:05 p.m. Wichita and Joplin will play a pair of seven inning contests with a brief break in between. One ticket will grant fans access to both games.
