Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Countdown to Face-off Kalamazoo Wings @ Fort Wayne Komets Memorial Coliseum Fort Wayne, IN Sunday, January 12, 2003 5:05 PM
Game Preview One of the best rivalries in minor league hockey will get renewed tonight as the Kalamazoo Wings travel to Fort Wayne to battle the Komets. This rivalry dates all the way back to the 1975 when both teams were in the former IHL. Since renewing the rivalry in the UHL, the Komets have gotten the better of the K-Wings, as Kalamazoo is 7-14-8 against the Komets.
After playing the top two teams in the Western Conference, the K-Wings are ready to take their shot against the beast of the east. Fort Wayne enters the game with the best record in the Eastern Conference, as well as a 2 game winning streak. Like the Komets, Kalamazoo will also enter the game winners of their last two. The K-Wings have also found some success on the road of late, as they have won 3 of their last 4 away from Wings Stadium.
Kalamazoo's offense has been on fire, as the K-Wings have scored a combined 11 goals in their last two games. The K-Wings will need to keep up their offensive assault, as they play the stingiest defense in the UHL. Fort Wayne has given up the fewest goals in the league, and their goaltender Tom Lawson in tops in the UHL in GAA, save percentage, and shutouts.

On the Road Again After winning two of their last three on home ice, the K-Wings will hit the road for a quick three game road swing. The road trip will start today in Fort Wayne, continue on Thursday in Adirondack, and conclude Friday night in Port Huron. As of late the road has been good for Kalamazoo, as the K-Wings have won 3 of their last 4 away from Wings Stadium.
Burning Inferno Mark Lawrence has been on a scoring tear in his last 10 games. Lawrence has managed a point in 9 of the K-Wings last 10 games. In those games Mark has scored 12 points (4 goals and 8 assists). The lone game Lawrence did not in was the K-Wings 5-0 loss to Elmira on Wednesday.
Lawrence and Roed Reach Milestone In their victory over Rockford, two K-Wing players reached personal milestones. Forward Mark Lawrence recorded his 200th career goal in the first period against the IceHogs, while Peter Roed tallied his 200th career point on an assist in the second period of last nights game.
Almost a Sure Thing When the K-Wings take a lead into the third period, the odds of them winning or at least getting a shootout point are almost 100 percent. The K-Wings are 8-1-2 when they have the lead heading into the final period.
