Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - Danielle Dube became the first woman to suit up for the Bakersfield Condors, and won her first career game, 6-4 over the Anchorage Aces in front of 6,548 fans at Centennial Garden on Saturday night.
The Condors took a 1-0 lead on Paul Willett's power play goal at 11:22 of the first period. Dube didn't see much action early in the game, but made several nice saves, including a point-blank save on Dean Larson to keep the 1-0 lead in the first. The lead wouldn't last, however, as Don Martin's point shot deflected past Dube for the 1-1 score at 16:39. The Condors weren't done in the first though, as Jason Jackman and Christian Skoryna both scored within a span of 1:19 late in the first to open up a two-goal lead after 20 minutes.
Both teams scored twice in the second period, starting with Kevin McNeill's 2-on-1 goal just 2:03 into the middle frame. The Condors regained the two-goal advantage with Shawn Byram's goal on the man advantage at 8:54. Dean Larson picked up his first of two goals on the night a couple minutes later to pull the Aces within a goal just past the midway point of the hockey game. Bakersfield continued to pressure the Aces, netting their fifth goal of the night with Jason Ralph's 13th of the season at 15:57 to make it 5-3 after two periods. The Condors had the lead in shots 33-14.
In the third period, Larson and the Aces again pulled within a goal of the Condors, as he tallied his second of the game at 10:27. Anchorage didn't play an entire shift, however, before the Condors pushed ahead for the final time, with Jackman's second goal of the contest. He came in on a breakaway and lifted a backhander over Christian Soucy for the 6-4 lead, which was the final score of the game.
Dube improved to 1-1 on the season, stopping 16 of 20 shots in the contest. The crowd erupted with every save, and grew to a crescendo as she was picked as the game's First Star.
Bakersfield hosts the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday night, January 15th in a 7:00pm match. The Steelheads remain in first place overall, despite suffering a 2-1 loss in San Diego tonight. Fresno kept pace with the Condors by picking up a 4-1 win in Long Beach. Wednesday's game features the annual Project Warm Families coat drive, sponsored by KGET-TV 17, KRAB Radio and The Gas Company. Any fan donating a new or gently used coat will receive a free Terrace Level ticket to the game.
