Fresno Falcons News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Fresno Falcons broke open a tie hockey game with three goals in the third period on Saturday to defeat the Long Beach Ice Dogs, 4-1, in front of a crowd of 4,178 at Long Beach Arena.

Both teams were scoreless until Jason McBain fired the puck into an empty net after Long Beach goaltender B.J. Boxma misplayed a clearing attempt for his first goal since his recent return to the Falcons at 1:41 of the second period. Long Beach would tie the game at one with just 25 seconds left in the frame when Bryan Vines beat Fresno netminder Terry Friesen with a wrist shot from the left circle.

Still tied at one in the third and the Falcons having failed to convert on a 5-on-3 power play, the Ice Dogs took another penalty to give Fresno a second chance with the two-man advantage. Ryan Duthie would score his fifth of the year and Jason Weaver would follow with his ninth as the Falcons converted just 25 seconds apart on the ensuing two power plays to stake themselves to a 3-1 lead. At 8:52 Colin Embley chipped home his ninth of the year, and Fresno took a three-goal lead, 4-1, in a span of two and a half minutes.

Neither team scored in the final 11 minutes as the Falcons tied a season-high with their fourth straight victory to finish a six-game road trip with a mark of 4-1-1. The win gives them a record of 16-12-4 and 36 points, three points behind the third-place Bakersfield Condors with two games in hand.

Fresno plays their third game in three days and fifth in six days tomorrow at Selland Arena when they host the Anchorage Aces. Sunday's game begins at 5 p.m. and features between-periods entertainment provided by the Zooperstars and posters commemorating Freddie the Falcon's birthday celebration to the first 1,000 fans. Tickets are still available at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www. ticketmaster.com.
