Alaska Aces News Release
BAKERSFIELD, California â Danielle Dube became the third woman to win a professional hockey game, turning in 16 saves as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the Anchorage Aces 6-4 in front of 6,548 Saturday at Centennial Garden.
The Condors dominated the opening 20 minutes, firing 18 shots on goal and taking a 1-0 lead on Paul Willett's 12th goal of the year on the power play at 11:22. The Aces deadlocked the contest on a Don Martin drive from the point, also with the man advantage at the 16:39 mark. Bakersfield needed only 31 seconds to regain the lead, as Jason Jackman swept in on a breakaway and beat goaltender Christian Soucy blocker side. Christian Skoryna's one-timer with 1:31 left in the period gave the Condors a 3-1 edge.
After a Bakersfield turnover early in the second period, Anchorage capitalized on the ensuing odd-man rush, which concluded with a perfect centering pass from Yvan Corbin to Kevin McNeill, who deked Dube and beat her with a backhander at 2:03. As they would all night, the Condors responded in kind, pushing the lead back to 4-2 on Shawn Byram's power play goal at 8:54. Less than two minutes later, Dean Larson scored the first of his two to trim the gap to 4-3, but Jason Ralph extended the margin to two goals once more at 15:57.
Trailing 5-3 midway through the third period, Larson converted another Aces' power play, banging home a rebound for his 19th of the year to reduce the deficit to one goal. Only 23 seconds later, however, Jackman poked the puck behind B.J. Young at the Anchorage blue line and was off and flying, beating a prostrate Soucy top shelf to put the game away. Corbin dished out four assists in defeat while Larson had a helper to go along with his two goals and McNeill and Martin each finished with a goal and an assist. Dube's win was the first of her pro career as she joined Manon Rheaume (1992-97) and Erin Whitten (1993-96) as the only women to win games at the professional level.
The Aces (10-24-2) finish up a three-games-in-three-nights-in-three-cities stretch tomorrow in a Sunday matinee with the Fresno Falcons at 4:00 p.m. AST. Anchorage has won two of the three previous meetings at Selland Arena this year but dropped a pair to Fresno (16-12-4) at home earlier this week by scores of 7-6 and 7-3. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
