Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Ice Dogs shot themselves in the foot with penalties Saturday night as the Fresno Falcons scored a pair of power-play goals in the three-goal third period. The Ice Dogs, who entered the final frame with a 1-1 tie, lost 4-1 at the Long Beach Arena.

Long Beach (13-8-2) received three penalties in a span of 2:09 in the third period to give Fresno back-to-back two-man advantages. Nathan Horne sprawled out in front of the net for the Ice Dogs to save a Fresno sure goal, but the Falcons scored twice in a span of 25 seconds to put the game out of reach.

The intensity was high throughout the first period even though neither team was able to put the puck in the back of the net. Tyler Willis had a goal waived off with 5:20 left in the opening period, and later had a breakaway chance stopped by Fresno's Terry Friesen.

At the start of the second period Boxma tried to clear the puck, but McBain stopped it at the blue line and fired upon on the empty net for his first goal, and point, as a Falcon. Bryan Vines tied the game with 24 seconds remaining in the period when he skated in from the right face-off circle and lifted the puck over Friesen's shoulder.

Ryan Duthie slapped a shot in from the right face-off circle at 6:33 to give Fresno (16-12-4) the go-ahead goal. Jason Weaver followed with his ninth goal of the year at 6:58. Colin Embley's goal at 8:52 prompted a goaltender change from Boxma (9-7-0) to Mike Buzak.

Long Beach didn't register its first shot on goal in the third period until 10:30 left in the game, and Friesen (12-9-3) stopped all four third period Ice Dog shots. The Ice Dogs also finished 0-8 on the power-play, including two two-man advantages, leaving the team 0-61 on the power-play in the last 14 games.
