Kalamazoo Wings News Release

A new season will begin in the ECHL this evening, as the Kalamazoo Wings face-off against the Fort Wayne Komets. While they have met 361 previous times, tonight is the first-time since the 2008-2009 season, when they were combatants in the International Hockey League, the K- Wings and Komets have met.

After going 1-0-1-0 in the preseason, the K-Wings are set to begin defense of North Division title. Since joining the league in the 2009-2010 season, Kalamazoo has brought home the division crown in each of the ECHL seasons.

Despite heading into a new league, the target will be large this season for the Komets. In their 62-year storied franchise history, the Komets have hoisted nine championships, most recently, last season in the Central Hockey League.

Lifting Up the Curtain

While the K-Wings and Komets have played each other for 36 years, opening the season in Fort Wayne isn't that common for the Kalamazoo. Friday will mark just the sixth time and the first since 2008 that the K-Wings have been the home opening opponent for the Komets.

Familiar Feel Kalamazoo's roster should have a familiar feel to fans. Of the K-Wings 21 players on the roster, 14 of them have played for the K-Wings in the careers.

Good in Openers Since joining the ECHL, the K-Wings have been great on opening night. Kalamazoo is 3-0-0-0 in their ECHL season opening games, outscoring their opponents 14-3 in those games.
