Trenton Titans News Release

Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, opened their season with a win Friday night, downing the Greeneville Road Warriors 3-1, in front of over 5,300 fans at the Sun National Bank Center.

The Titans jumped out to an early lead, cashing in on two power play opportunities in the first period. Stephen Schultz started the season off right, beating Nathan Lieuwen just 4:44 into the contest for the eventual game-winner. Jason Akeson followed with another man-up tally just five minutes later to increase the lead for the Titans.

Brandon Wong responded for Greeneville, jamming home a rebound on the doorstep at 16:43 to cut the deficit in half before the end of the period.

Ryan Hayes added another goal for the Titans in the second, redirecting a shot from Mitch Versteeg at 12:51 to restore the two-goal lead. Marcel Noebels finished the night with two assists, while Akeson, who was named the "first Ace" of the game, Andy Bombach and Blake Kessel also recorded assists for the Titans.

Trenton never relinquished the lead, despite being outshot, 32-19 and surrendering six power plays to Greeneville, who were unable to solve the Titans penalty kill. The Titans went just two-for-seven on the man advantage, despite starting off red-hot.

Niko Hovinen stopped 31 of 32 shots for Trenton in his ECHL debut while Nathan Lieuwen turned aside 16 of 19 for the Road Warriors.

The Titans are back in action tomorrow night, as they travel to Reading to take on the Royals. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
