Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars never led Thursday night against the Burlington Bees, and several different comebacks kept coming up short in a 7-6 loss in front of 5,052 at Elfstrom Stadium.

The Cougars have now played nine consecutive games that have been decided by three runs or less, six of which have been one-run affairs.

Starter T.J. Franco struggled in his five innings of work, allowing three first-inning runs and another in the second for a 4-0 deficit.

Steve Kleen's RBI single off Michael Penn in the second and two unearned runs in the third pulled the Cougars to within 4-3, but the Bees scored twice in the fourth against Franco to make it 6-3. Anthony Recker's second home run in as many games came in the fifth and cut it to 6-4.

Both starters left after five frames. Franco (3-2) gave up six runs on 10 hits, walked one and fanned three in the loss. Ron Madej worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief before Randy Rapp gave up a solo homer in the eighth, the first earned run allowed by a Cougars reliever in 35 2/3 innings.

Down 7-4 in the eighth against Chris Hayes, Isaac Omura doubled home Kleen, and Jose Pineda singled in Matt Sulentic in the ninth versus Kraig Schambough. The Cougars had the tying run at third base and the winning one at first when Raul Padron grounded out to first to provide the 7-6 final. Schambough notched his 12th save, and Penn (6-2) beat the Cougars for the second time this season.

The Cougars (35-24) and Bees (24-35) play again Friday night at 6:30 CT when Joe Piekarz (7-6, 3.25) faces Matt Kniginyzky (9-5, 3.51).
