West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps continue to dominate the Midwest League on the field and now, the team is dominating the post-season awards as well. This afternoon, three Whitecaps players and manager Matt Walbeck were named to the Midwest League Post-Season All Star team. This is the third time in franchise history that three players have been honored.
Shortstop Mike Holliman, outfielder Cameron Maybin and right handed relief pitcher Orlando Perdomo were chosen by Midwest League managers as the best players at their individual positions. Maybin was also named Prospect of the Year, an honor which has only been given to one other Whitecap, Robert Fick in 1997. The other Midwest League managers chose Walbeck as the Manager of the Year. He is the second Whitecaps manager to receive the honor; Bruce Fields was named MWL Manager of the Year in 1997 and 2000.
Maybin is currently hitting .321 with seven home runs and 61 RBI. The 19-year-old Asheville, N.C. native is one of the league leaders in hitting, stolen bases and on-base percentage. Earlier this season, Maybin was chosen to play in the Futures Game during the Major League All-Star Game festivities. Baseball America also named him the best baserunner, fastest baserunner and the most exciting player in the Midwest League.
Perdomo, who just landed on the disabled list, currently leagues the league with 28 saves. The 22-year-old from Venezuela is currently 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA. Perdomo was also named to the Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star Team.
The team's captain, Holliman, has etched his name in the Whitecaps record books several times this season. The 24-year-old from Dallas shattered the team record for triples with 13, became the only player in franchise history to have a quadruple double and is one of three players to hit for the cycle. Holliman is also a league leader in the triples category. He is hitting .275 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI.
This is the first time Walbeck has been named Manager of the Year in his three years with the Whitecaps. In 2005 and 2006, Baseball America picked Walbeck as the Midwest League's best managerial prospect. Since coming to West Michigan, Walbeck has posted a 222-182 record and lead the team to the playoffs all three seasons. In 2004, his first season as manager, his team won the Midwest League Championship.
Tonight, the Whitecaps begin their final homestand of the regular season which wraps up Thursday, August 31. Playoffs begin September 6 and the first home playoff game will be Thursday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are still available for all games and can be purchased by calling the Whitecaps Ticket Office at 616-784-4131 or on-line at www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
