Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts plated five runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-1 decision over the South Bend SilverHawks in the series opener at Oldsmobile Park before 5,897 fans Thursday night.

After waiting out a 1 hour 54 rain delay to start the game, the Lugnuts took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Joey Metropoulos doubled to left field and later scored on a David Hicks single to right-center field that gave Lansing the early lead.

The score stayed that way until the seventh, when the SilverHawks tied the game by taking advantage of a Lugnut error. Orlando Mercado reached on an error by catcher Brian Bormaster and scored when Ricardo Sosa doubled off of the fence in left field to make it 1-1.

The Lugnuts were able to answer back in the bottom of the frame with the decisive five runs. Metropoulos smacked his second his double of the night to lead the inning off. Brian Pettway and Brian Bormaster both drew walks to load the bases for Jesus Gonzalez. Gonzalez then singled into right field to bring home Metropoulos and Pettway to make it 3-1. After Sean Shoffit singled to reload the bases for Lansing, Luke Hetherington ripped a single to center to plate two more runs to make it 5-1. Anthony Garibaldi's groundout scored Shoffit to end the scoring at 6-1.

Sean Stidfole (7-6) picked up the win for the Lugnuts, tossing seven sterling innings of two hit baseball. He allowed just one unearned run while fanning nine batters.

Ramon Sanchez (1-10) suffered the loss for the SilverHawks in relief, allowing three runs on two hits.

Lansing and South Bend will continue the series on Friday night at Oldsmobile Park. It will be MSU / U of M night with LAFCU Fireworks to follow the game. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
