Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
August 24, 2006 - Marco Albano's inside the park home run in the sixth inning wasn't enough offense as the Kernels fell to the Beloit Snappers in front of 2,570 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.
Albano hit a sinking line drive into center field that forced center fielder Edward Ovalle to make a diving attempt to catch the ball. Ovalle missed and as the ball rolled all the way to the fence, Albano streaked around the bases and slid easily into home with the only run for the Kernels.
Beloit starter Yohan Pino (13-2) scattered three hits over eight innings of work with no walks and seven strikeouts. Dan Leatherman pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season. Brok Butcher (3-2) gave up six hits and four runs over seven innings and struck out five, but was saddled with the loss.
The Kernels were held to only three hits, but two went for extra bases. Larry Infante had a double to go with Albano's home run. And Madison Edwards had the third and final hit for the home team.
The Kernels look to get back into the win column on Friday night as Amalio Diaz (2-0) starts for the Kernels against Eddie Morlan (5-5). Game time is 7 pm with the gates opening at 6 pm.
It will be Oncology Associates Cancer Awareness Night, rescheduled from August 10. The Kernels will wear special pink jerseys that will be sold via a silent auction during the game with the proceeds going towards cancer research. The Kernels also welcome groups from 4-H Clubs and Isaac Newton Christian Academy to Friday's game. Tickets can be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com
