Kane County Cougars News Release

South Bend, IN - The Kane County Cougars opened an eight-game road trip and four-game series Thursday afternoon against the South Bend Silver Hawks but saw a six-game winning streak come to an end in an 11-2 loss. The Cougars never led and allowed five runs in the bottom of the sixth after they had tied the score in the top half. Anthony Recker had two hits and one RBI, and Joe Piekarz suffered the loss.

The Silver Hawks plated two runners agianst Piekarz in the first inning, but the left-hander settled down over the next four innings to set up the Cougars offense, which had done little against Anthony Cupps to that point. Isaac Omura led off with a walk, and Chad Boyd roped a run-scoring double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and get the Cougars on the board. After Jose Pineda singled to move Boyd to third, Recker reached on a fielder's choice that evened the affair, 2-2.

South Bend handled the run production the rest of the way, forcing Piekarz to leave in the sixth after he allowed four runs and adding one tally against Randy Rapp. Then Joel Posey served up four runs in the eighth for what became an 11-2 final.

Piekarz (4-4) suffered the loss after allowing six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings, and Forrest Cory (4-2) got the relief victory. The Cougars (17-10) and Silver Hawks (19-7) battle again Friday night at 6 CDT when Trey Shields (7-8, 5.38) and Kyle Wright (5-2, 3.67) square off.
