South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend - In order for the South Bend Silver Hawks to make a legitimate run at a second straight Midwest League Championship, they will eventually have to play a team from the Western Division. Going into Thursday night's game with the Kane County Cougars, the Hawks were winless. The Hawks fortune changed, scoring nine runs in their last three at bats to defeat the Cougars 11-2.

The Hawks carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning with the Cougars catching the Hawks in the visitor's half of the inning. In the home half, the Hawks were able to get to Kane County starter Joe Piekarz.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks pushed five runs across the plate. Orlando Mercado's RBI single made it 1-0. Ricardo Sosa scored on a fielding error and a wild pitch by reliever Randy Rapp gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Pedro Ciriaco's two-run single capped the five run inning for a 5-0 lead.

Silver Hawks reliever Forest Cory spelled starter Anthony Cupps and pitched wonderfully in relief, not allowing a hit in in 2.1 innings and improving his record to 4-2.

The Silver Hawks (52-40, 19-7) continue their four game series Friday night with the Cougars. First pitch is slated for 7PM. Friday, Newstalk 960 Weekday Sports Beat will broadcast live from the Budweiser Bullpen Bar and Grille, with Darin Pritchett and Rick Carter serving as host.

Tickets for all Silver Hawks games can be purchased by calling the box office at (574) 235-9988 or visiting www.silverhawks.com.
