Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - The Peoria Chiefs pitching staff continued its domination of the Lugnuts' lineup on Thursday night, shutting out Lansing 3-0 before 6,096 fans at Oldsmobile Park. Lansing has lost all five games to the Chiefs this season.
Peoria cracked the scoreboard in the third inning when Robinson Chirinos was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
The Chiefs put another run on the board in the sixth when Ryne Malone walked and moved to third base with one out. Alberto Garcia then lined out to the Lugnuts' third baseman Jason Armstrong, who tagged third to complete the double play. However, the play was overruled and Malone would later score on a Mark Reed single that made it 2-0.
Peoria added one more run in the eighth. Kyle Reynolds singled and moved to third on a Alberto Garcia double. Reynolds would score when Davy Gregg singled into left to extend the lead to 3-0.
The run support would be more than enough for Mitch Atkins (9-3), who hurled seven innings of five hit baseball while fanning five.
Kristian Bell (6-6) had the Lugnuts second straight quality start, but took the loss after a seven inning performance that saw him allow just two runs on seven hits.
Matt Avery got his 11th save of the year.
Lansing (49-45, 9-18) will look to stop the seven game losing skid on Friday night against Peoria (56-40, 15-12). Casey McKenzie (0-2, 5.28) will start for the Lugnuts, while Scott Taylor (5-5, 3.35) will take the ball for the Chiefs. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the game. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
