Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
RHP Donnie Smith has been promoted from State College to Quad Cities by the St. Louis Cardinals, the Swing of the Quad Cities announced on Thursday. The 23-year-old hurler will join the starting rotation in place of the recently promoted Cory Meacham, and is expected to pitch on Saturday against Cedar Rapids.
Smith, a fourth round pick in the 2004 draft, was limited to just five starts with the Swing in 2005 before his season was cut short by shoulder surgery. The Old Dominion product was 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 24 innings over five starts. That performance came on the heels of a strong 2004 debut in which Smith struck out 41 while walking just five in 46.1 innings, going 3-3 with a 3.88 ERA for the New Jersey Cardinals (Short Season-A New York-Penn League).
The 6-2, 210-pounder made his first appearance of the 2006 season with the State College Spikes (New York-Penn) on June 27, and has posted a 1-1 record with a 3.21 ERA in five starts. That includes three outings of six innings or more and 12 strikeouts against four walks over 28 innings of work.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 24 active players, one less than the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
