Wizards freeze the Devil Rays
July 20, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays fell to the Fort Wayne Wizards on Thirsty Thursday by a score of 5-1. The Devil Rays had quite a crowd to play for as USSSA Little Leaguers from all over the country came out to support the Rays.
Jake McGee took the start for the Rays and lasted seven innings. McGee fanned five Wizards to increase his Midwest League leading total to 129. Jake gave up six hits and four runs with three of them earned.
One of the hits that McGee gave up was a towering two-run homerun in the sixth inning from third baseman David Freese. Freese was a ninth round draft pick this year and has only 13 Midwest League games under his belt. The homerun was the first of his professional career.
Colt Simmons hit his first homerun as a Devil Ray in the third inning with nobody on and nobody out. The homer was the lone run scored by the Rays on Thursday night.
The D-Rays were only able to manage four hits on the night. Other than Simmons' homerun, the Rays got singles by Cesar Suarez, Garrett Groce, and Christian Lopez.
Eddie DeLaCruz entered the game in relief of McGee in the eighth inning. Eddie gave up one hit, one unearned run and hit a batter in his 1.1 innings of work. Drew Bidga entered to finish out the game for the final two outs. He struck out a batter and didn't give up any hits.
The Devil Rays and Wizards square off again for the second game of the four game series on Friday night. Friday Night is Medieval Night at C.O. Brown. There will be actors at the stadium dressed in traditional medieval attire and they will perform authentic dancing and combat. Stick around because there are also fireworks after the game presented by WIN 98.5 FM.
