Kane County Cougars News Release

PEORIA, IL - It took the Kane County Cougars 24 innings of baseball on Sunday to sweep a doubleheader against the Peoria Chiefs at O'Brien Field, but it was worth the wait, as the Cougars improved their record to 10-0 and tied a franchise record for most consecutive victories. They took Game 1, 2-1, before a 17-inning marathon in Game 2 ended with a 6-4 triumph.

Scott Mitchinson (1-0) was the winning pitcher in the opener, working five innings of one-run, five-hit ball before Scott Moore handled the final two frames for his first save. Michael Lissman's homer in the first off Zach Ashwood made it 1-0, and after the Chiefs tied it in the second, Todd Johnson delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth for what became a 2-1 final.

The Cougars fell behind 3-0 early in Game 2, as starter Jamie Richmond struggled, but the offense kicked in during the third inning. Matt Ray and Corey Brown posted back-to-back run-scoring singles to cut it to 3-2, then the Chiefs countered with a run in the bottom half before Ray came through in the fourth with a two-out, two-run double to make it 4-4.

Ray's double turned out to be the final run-producing hit until the 17th inning. The Cougars' bullpen quintet of Nick Walters, Justin Friend, Branden Dewing, position player Shane Keough and Leonardo Espinal (1-0) combined for 14 innings of three-hit relief and 14 strikeouts, and the offense finally came to life in the 17th against infielder-turned-pitcher Jonathan Mota (0-1). Jonathan Johnston's sacrifice fly brought home Christian Vitters, and Ray followed with a single to score Walter Correa for the 6-4 tilt.

The Cougars (10-0) are back in action Monday night at 6 CT with the start of a three-game series at Elfstrom Stadium against the South Bend Silver Hawks (1-9). Scott Hodsdon (0-0) will face Jordan Norberto (0-2).
