Kane County Cougars News Release

Midland, Mich. - James Heuser worked 7 2/3 innings on the mound, and the offense knocked out 11 hits and drew 10 walks as the Kane County Cougars cruised to an 11-2 win Sunday afternoon over the Great Lakes Loons in front of 5,346 fans at Dow Diamond. The Cougars have won a season-high six consecutive games, claimed 11 of their last 13 and are above .500 for the first time this year and 2.5 games out of a playoff spot.

Heuser (9-6), coming off a nine-inning complete-game victory last Tuesday in Burlington, posted another quality start to beat the Loons for the second time. He allowed two first-inning runs but didn't give up a hit after the second, retiring seven in a row at one point and then 11 more later before departing with two men on base in the eighth. He gave up six hits, walked one and fanned three for his third win in as many outings. Sam Demel, Oakland's 3rd-round pick this past June, made his Cougars debut with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Trailing 2-0, the Cougars' offense turned the game around in the second against Chris Malone (0-1) and never looked back. Christian Vitters, Todd Johnson and Mike Massaro each drove in one, and an error helped lead to a five-run frame. Jermaine Mitchell and Josh Horton each had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and fifth, respectively, to make it 7-2, and Alex Valdez launched a long solo homer in the seventh for an 8-2 affair. The Cougars scored three more in the ninth to account for the 11-2 final.

The Cougars (21-20), who are outscoring the opposition 43-17 during the six-game winning streak, look to make it seven in a row and a four-game sweep of the Loons (12-29) in the finale on Monday afternoon at 2:05 CT. Jason Fernandez (6-1) is scheduled to oppose James Adkins (0-1).
