Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - One night after a ninth inning comeback to knock off the Beloit Snappers, the Dayton Dragons had the opportunity to turn the trick again. Sunday night however, there would be no late inning magic. The Snappers held on for the 4-3 win to take a two games to one lead in the four game series heading into Monday's finale.
Dayton starter Rafael Gonzalez (LP, 11-5) fell victim to the home run ball in his 5.0 innings on the hill Sunday night. After blanking the Snappers for 3.2 innings, Gonzalez served up two home runs before getting the final out in the fourth. Chris Parmelee hit his 13th home run of the season, and was followed immediately by Eli Tintor connecting for his fifth. The back-to-back jacks gave the Snappers a 2-0 lead after four innings.
Beloit went back to the long ball in the top of the fifth. Yancarlos Ortiz led off the inning with a single, and was at second base with two outs when Steven Singleton crushed a ball over the right field fence. The two run blast extended the Snappers lead to 4-0.
Dayton began the comeback trail against Beloit starter Tyler Robertson (WP, 7-2) in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two times in the frame. Tony Esquer began the inning with a single, and scored one out later on a triple from Keltavious Jones. Billy Rojo extended his hitting streak to three and picked up an RBI when he drove in Jones with a single to left field, cutting into the lead at 4-2.
The Dragons added another run and chased Robertson from the game in the sixth inning. Denis Phipps drew a one out walk and went to third on a double from Carson Kainer. Esquer grounded out to the shortstop, but it was enough to score Phipps to make it a one run ballgame. Dan Leatherman (ND) was summoned from the bullpen, and he responded by getting the final out of the inning to end the threat.
Leatherman followed up the end up the sixth with two more scoreless innings of relief. He then turned it over to Danny Vais (SV, 2) for the ninth. Vais set down the Dragons in order to preserve the one run victory.
The Dragons wrap up the home stand with game four of the series with the Beloit Snappers Monday night at 7:00 PM. The Dragons will send LHP Alexander Smit (1-2, 1.53 ERA) to the mound while the Snappers counter with RHP Alex Burnett (6-6, 2.95 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. All Dragons games in 2007 are streamed live on the internet via All In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
