Beloit Sky Carp News Release
GENEVA, IL - Bijan Rademacher skied a walk-off, sacrifice fly into center, bringing in the winning run as the Kane County Cougars downed the Beloit Snappers 4-3 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in the first game of a Midwest League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars completed a sweep of the twin bill with a 7-4 victory in game two, as Rock Shoulders went deep twice.
The sweep ends Beloit's seven game win streak and they find themselves at 28-20. Kane County's great day ups their record to 23-24.
Game one's game-winning rally started when Albert Almora (3-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) slapped a lead-off single back through the middle and Dan Vogelbach moved Almora to third with a double into the right field corner. After Brent Powers (2-1) issued an intentional walk, Rademacher hit a deep fly to center and, after the catch, Almora waltzed home with the winning run. Two-and-two-thirds innings of shutout relief by Nathan Dorris (2-2) allowed him to grab the victory. The Snappers plated single runs in the first and second on an RBI groundout by Bruce Maxwell and a run-scoring single by Ryan Mathews, respectively. An unearned run brought the Cougars to within 2-1 in the third, as Vogelbach reached on one error and later scored on another.
In the fifth inning, Beloit had some good fortune of its own when Christopher Bostick (1-2, 2 runs) reached on an error. A single and a wild pitch moved him to third and Renato Nunez shot a base hit back through the box to drive him in. The Snappers had a chance for more in the frame, but Bruce Maxwell was thrown out at home attempting to tag up on a Matt Olson fly ball.
The bottom half of the inning saw Kane County tie up the game, but miss a chance for much more. Two singles kicked things off and Almora found the left-center field gap for a double that plated both runners. The Cougars missed a chance to take the lead, though, as Powers took over and set down three in a row to keep the game tied. After threats by each team to break the tie, Rademacher came through in the seventh.
The second game began with Beloit once again moving in front, this time on Nunez's tenth homer of the year, which came with a man on in the first.
Vogelbach got Kane County on the board in their half of the inning when he sent a ball into the right-center field gap for an RBI double. Oliver Zapata grabbed the lead for the Cougars with a two-run double in the second. Zapata would also come around to score in the inning to make the score 4-2.
Leading off the top of the third, Mathews deposited the inning's first pitch over the left field wall for his fifth homer of the season, bringing the Snappers to within one run and, in the same frame, Nunez tied the game by driving a double into left-center to score Brett Vertigan.
Shoulders made sure the tie didn't last long, however. The first baseman hit his first homer of the evening, a solo shot, over the right field fence in the bottom of the third. His next at-bat was in the fifth and once again he cleared the wall in right, this time with a two-run blast, his twelfth, and the score went to 7-4.
Ian Dickson (2-2) came out of the bullpen in the fifth and threw shutout ball for the final three innings, including a scoreless seventh, to pick up the victory.
The series continues Sunday evening with another contest scheduled to begin at 6:30pm. Doing the pitching for the Snappers will be RHP Raul Alcantara (5-1, 2.81 ERA), while RHP Tayler Scott (2-1, 3.30 ERA) starts for the Cougars.
